There are two different Trunks who both appear in the Dragon Ball Z.
Present Trunks[]
This is Trunks from the Buu Saga. He is 8 years old and is already a Super Saiyan. His best friend is Goten, who is Goku's and Chi-Chi's second son. He takes after his father, Vegeta, a lot: having an over-confident air about himself. He is half-saiyan and was born without a tail. Together Goten and Trunks fuse into a a very powerful warrior named Gotenks.
Future Trunks[]
This is the Trunks from the alternate time-line. In his time line , all Z Fighters are killed with exception of gohan. He is recognised as he wields a sword and can become a Super Saiyan, he obtained this form after witnessing Gohan's death. He travels back in time to warn Goku and his friends about the Androids. Once the Z fighters realize they cannot defeat Androids 16, 17, and 18 Vegeta and Trunks train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, before Goku and Gohan do. During this time, Trunks achieves his Super Trunks transformation in which his muscles become abnormally huge and his power spikes tremendously. After the Cell Games, he returns to his own time to destroy the Androids and Cell.

Apearance[]
Both Trunks have their mothers purple hair and their fathers skin tone.Future trunks wears a purple jacket along with yellow boots until he trains in the hyperbolic time chamber. Present Trunks wears a green gi along with yellow boots (the same as future trunks). during the cell saga fture trunks wears the same type of saiyan armor as his father. future trunks weilds a sword until it was broken by Android 18, in Dragon Ball Z movie 13, present Trunks also obtains a sword very similar to future trunks.

- Super Android 13! - future Trunks first appearance in a movie. He helps defeat android 15 and 14.

- Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan -- Future Trunks along with Gohan, Goku, Vegeta and Piccolo fight Broly. Present Trunks is seen as a baby in the backround.
- Bojack Unbound --- this is the final apearance of future trunks, he fights gokua (one of Bojack's henchmen). Again present trunks is seen as a baby in the back ground.
- Broly - Second Coming -- trunks, goten , videl and gohan fight together to beat Brolly along with Krillin.
- Bio-Broly --- Goten, Trunks, Android 18 and Krillin unintentinally enter a tournament to fight Bio-Broly.
- Fusion Reborn -- Trunks and Goten fuse into Gotenks to fight some old enemys.
- Wrath of the Dragon -- again Trunks and Goten fuse into Gotenks to defeat Hirudegan's first form. Tapion gives his sword to Trunks at the end of the movie.
